Contest News and Notes20171104-IMG_1546

I'm excited to introduce my latest shawl design the MEGAROW Shawl now available on Ravelry for $6.00 US. (on sale for $3 until 11/25)

The MEGAROW Shawl is a top down crescent shawl that is designed for a main color, a gradient and a contrast color for the border. The body and border are done all in garter stitch. The gradient is worked in a very simple lace stitch. Short rows are worked in the garter sections so you don't even need to worry about picking up wraps.

Finished Size: 120 inches/305 cm wide and 18 in/46 cm deep at center

Yarn:
  • Color A: 350 yards/320 meters (main color)
  • Color B, C, D, E & F: 500 yards/ 457 meters (gradient)
  • Color G: 260 yards (238 meters) (border)
  •  Total: 1110 yards/1015 meter

Life in Focus

Happiness Project- November: Gratefulness
  • I am working on a photo book with journaling in Picaboo focused on gratefulness
  • Leaving podcast reviews to show others I'm grateful.

On a Happy Note

  • We had a blast at our family Halloween Party and Trick or Treating with the kids. There is some audio Millie wanted to record while we were trick or treating.
  • I had a great time at a surprise party for my friend Melissa's birthday
  • Dan and I enjoy dinner with my cousin from NH and my parents
  • My good friend Laura is coming for Thanksgiving this year!
  • The temps have really dropped and its properly cold enough to snuggle up in hand knits.

Quote of the Week

“Do not look back. And do not dream about the future, either. It will neither give you back the past, nor satisfy your other daydreams. Your duty, your reward—your destiny—are here and now.”

Key Details Mentioned in this Episode:

Life in Focus

Happiness Project: September--- Learn new things
  • I learned a lot from making my first crochet shawl.
  • Trying the FLK heel was a great learning moment for me. I want to try another heel in the near future. What do you recommend? Vanilla is the New Black?
October: Time & Energy
  • Goal: Look at ways I'm wasting time and energy & reset.
  • Think hard about what I do. Ask "why" more often. When I have an automatic thought- don't just act on instinct. See what really makes sense. Get off auto pilot.

On a Happy Note

  • Took a Friday off to go Outlet shopping with my best friend, Kris!
  • I brought my niece Emelyn to Stitch House during the Greater Boston Yarn Crawl. She knit on her cowl for a little bit before we headed north to go apple picking.
  • Met Kris, Matt, Aila and Will for an unseasonably warm day of Apple picking at Applecrest in Hampton Falls NH. Every year they add something- this year it was a sunflower maze. So beautiful. Only regret was not taking photos earlier in the day. They started turning away from the sun as the day went on.
  • Congrats to Mom and Dad on their 40th anniversary!
  • Finished my first session of Hiit Classes at the gym near work. It was brutal but I definitely feel stronger. I was able to sign up for the 3 out of the next 8 I'm able to go to.
  • Ordered 12x12 lay flat photo book Picaboo and love it!
  • My grandmother is on Facebook and sent me this cute message the other day! Made my day!
  • I got a haircut. Loving this shorter look.
  • My niece Aila is going to be performing in the Boston Ballet's The Nutcracker this winter as a lamb.

  • Favorite Post in End Zone Dance Thread: Instructions (click gray heart- find it in your Favorites in your Notebook)
  • Florence of Designs of Acadia has created a Pigskin Party Logo Tote Get yours today. They're only $12.
  • Monday Night Scavenger Hunt
    • Every Monday night Lisa will post a clue to an item by one of our sponsors. You have until the following Monday night to look up that clue and find the item.
  • Kick It Off With Color : Our First Interception. Thank you to Sponsor: Yarn Love Yarn
    • Most football teams have 2-3 colors in their uniforms! Let's get inspired by all that color and get some colorful projects off the needles/hooks.
    • Requirements:
      • Finish a project of at least 50 yards before 9/30 that contains at least 2 different colors
      • The 2 colors can be found within 1 yarn. You can use multiple yarns. Totally up to you.
      • If you have to ask if its two separate colors it's probably not. Blue and light blue are not two different colors. Blue and orange are two separate colors.
      • These colors do not have to be your team colors, NFL colors or even any sports teams colors. It's just the kicking off point for color combinations but don't limit yourself.
      • Project can be knit, crocheted, woven, spun or machine knit.
      • Max of 2 entries per person.
Prizes:
  • 2 lucky winners (pulled by Random Number Generator from this thread) will get to choose a skein of yarn of his/her choice from Yarn Love Yarn

September Happiness Project: Learning

  • Labor Day free streaming on Craftsy
  • Thanks to  knittykitties  for gifting me a Creative Bug 3 month subscription. I can't wait to try out a few classes.
  • Thanks to DCAlaneknits for posting in the Episode 120 chat thread with this link to Mother Bear Face Tutorials: 2 Knit Lit Chicks Podcast.
  • I'm looking forward to watching and learning about the Philosopher Wool Technique for 2 handed colorwork knitting. Planning ahead for colorwork baby sweater I want to cast on soon
  • I watched a Podcasting 101 on Creative Live (9/11).
  • Crochet Shawl (will be a first for me)
  • Fish Lip Kiss Heel (will be a new heel for me)
  • Thank you to Lisa for letting me borrow her spindle and some fiber and teaching me basics so I could play with spinning at home.
  • Won't get all of these done in next 15 days or so, but having found resources and prepped things out will set me on the right path and I'm really enjoying this focus.

On a Happy Note

  • My cousin Kara's wedding. So much fun! Wore my new black lace dress. Thanks for all of the compliments!
  • HIIT training at gym. Really hard, but the 30 minutes goes by really fast. twice a week for 4 weeks. In the third week now.
  • Fall coming. Very cool in the mornings here. My parents pool is closed (sniff) and I've had two weekends at home to get things done. Feels good. Mostly why I've gotten so much shawl design work done.
  • Family dinner and campfire time!
  • Gretchen Rubin's new book The Four Tendencies was released on 9/12. I was lucky to get tickets to the first stop on her book tour that night in Cambridge. Went with my friend Kim. We've read all of Gretchen's books, listen to her Happier Podcast religiously and use her framework all the time at work. As project managers we don't have staff who report to us. Have to use influence and persuasion to get others to do things for us.

Quote of the Week

“Listen with curiosity. Speak with honesty. Act with integrity. The greatest problem with communication is we don’t listen to understand. We listen to reply. When we listen with curiosity, we don’t listen with the intent to reply. We listen for what’s behind the words.”

My September Plan: Learning

  • I'm thinking about taking a Craftsy class, trying new knitting or crochet techniques, taking out some library books. Do you have any suggestions from me?

On a Happy Note

  • We saw America and 3 Dog Night at South Shore Music Circus.
  • My friends came to visit for the weekend and we celebrated my grandmother's birthday.
  • I enjoyed the Solar Eclipse, but even funnier is this video Total Eclipse of the Heart Literal Video.
  • I met up with some knitting friends at Slum Brew in Assembly Row Somerville.
  • We've had lots of summer fun with the nieces and nephews. Sleepovers, crafts, dance camps etc!
  • Dan and I kayaked the North River. The first half was amazing. The rest was a struggle but we survived! Ha!
  • The kids contracted lice and so kindly shared it with me. Sigh. If you ever have the misfortune, my recommendation is to go to a professional place like this instead of using the drugstore shampoos!
  • Signed up for hiit training for 4 weeks with my work friends. We survived!

Quote of the Week

Life in Focus

Happiness Project 2017- July= Focus on Family
  • Played a board game called Spontuneous with my cousins, aunt and uncle. I'm not usually huge into board games but this was fun and I'm glad I chose to say yes!

  • I made it a point to go up to Camp to see my cousin for my great uncle's memorial service. So great to spend quality time with my cousin who lives in Florida.

On a Happy Note

  • Kayaking

    • Dan and I did about 8 miles of kayaking in NH last week. I love it so much!
  •  I've been experimenting with getting at least 70g of protein per day to see if it will help me build muscle and potentially lose a pound or two. Some resources I mentioned

Life in Focus

July: Focus on Family
  • We spent the first 5 days of the month in NH with my parents, my best friend, Dan's brother and my niece and nephew. Quality family time that you can hear more about from Aila (8) and Will (10) at the end of the episode.
  • I spent quality time with my great Aunt Florence after knee replacement. When she's done w/ rehab for her knee, going to make a date to have her help me with a sewing project.

On a Happy Note

  • Dan and I are planning a kayak camping trip in August.
  • My friend Devon was back in the US for a visit. She lives in Vienna now with her husband and they are expecting first baby in November. While she was home, she, Kris and I made this corn chowder recipe from Food + Wine. It was a little bland so we added a little cayan pepper and about a cup and half of Fiesta blend shredded cheese from Whole Foods (just what I had in my fridge). Then on Sunday we went to her Shower.
  • Enjoying getting back to walking on a more consistent basis.
  • Trying out new "recipes" (I don't follow recipes strictly)
    • Spaghetti Squash, Roasted Red Pepper, Zucchini, Eggplant, Tomatoes Basil, Ricotta (lazy man's veggie lasagne)
    • Overnight Oats: 1/2 c rolled oats, 3/4 c unsweetened almond/coconut blend milk, 1scoop of vanilla protein, cinnamon and blueberries- put in fridge overnight. 6 Weight Watchers Smart Points

  • The 12 Months to Christmas KAL is a craft-a-long that helps you prepare for the busy winter holiday season. Complete gift projects each month (or just in the months that you choose) so you don’t have to scramble in December. Find some cool new gift ideas, cheer each other on, and we’ll provide some motivation in the form of the potential to win prizes!

  • Declare a WIP from 2016 or earlier within the first 5 days of the month, posting a photo of it in the thread. Finish the project by the end of the month, update your post with your FO photo and you'll be eligible to win a Ravelry downloadable pattern of your choosing up to $8.

On a Happy Note

  • Our surprise dance at my dancing school's 35th Anniversary Recital went well.
  • Riley and Millie slept over afterwards and of course we had a blast. They always love Dan's pancakes. Audio of them at the end of the episode.
  • Dan and I took our kayaks for a second outing.
  • We had an awesome pool day to celebrate Oisin's 9th Birthday
  • I've been able to work out more and my heel is nearly healed!
  • My friend Dan etched a glass with my podcast logo! SO COOL!
