Quote of the Week

From Miracle on 34th Street

"I'm not just a whimsical figure who wears a charming suit and affects a jolly demeanor, you know. I'm a symbol. I'm a symbol of the human ability to be able to suppress the selfish and hateful tendencies that rule the major part of our lives. If you can't believe, if you can't accept anything on faith, then you're doomed to a life dominated by doubt." -Kris Kringle

Quote of the Week

"Before you call someone lazy or judge them, try to imagine their perspective, beliefs, and abilities and forget yours. That is, respond with curiosity and empathy. When you do, I predict you’ll find yourself understanding their choices. You may not like their beliefs and choices, but you’ll understand them."

Quote of the Week

  • “Just because your mind tells you that something is awful or evil or unplanned or otherwise negative doesn’t mean you have to agree. Rhinebeck Festival Prep: My Tips
  • Clothes- layers. Wear your knits.
    • Tip: pick your hand knits first. Choose the rest of your outfit accordingly!
  • Shoes should be comfy (and not new). Something you won't mind if they get covered in muck.
  • Bag/purse- try not to make it too big.
  • Camera- capture the fun. For me, iPhone is great.
    • Pen + paper- in case you see a pattern you want to jot down name of etc. If you're a digital person you could take photos and jot them down later.
  • Check out vendor list in advance. Make list of MUST go to vendors and where they are located.
  • Make list of what you'd like to buy yarn for. Put list of what you need on phone/paper (something that doesn't require internet) cell service is getting better but can still be spotty.
  • Bring snacks/water. Aim to eat at non-traditional times. Everyone wants to get lunch at 12 or 1. It's hard to do when you just want to shop and see and chat. I recommend setting timers on your phone if you're the type who can get lost in the day.
  • Bing a mix of cash and card if possible.
    • Food vendors sometimes only take cash
    • Some booths line for cash and one for cards. if have both- you can pick shorter line.
  • Don't pack too much knitting. Simple sock etc. bring extra sock needle or hat needle. You may want to cast on right  away!
  • Many things at the really packed booths at Rhinebeck DO SELL OUT. Some vendors bring stock for Sunday. Some don't. Many people like to do a loop before committing to things but if there's only a couple and you're going to majorly regret it if its gone later. Consider buying it on the first pass.

Ask Me Anything

  • I answered a question from cynalune on Ravelry about my dream knitting bag.
    • My favorite purse currently I purchase from this shop on Etsy.
    • Hear more about my 2 bag system for commuting to work via train on Episode 93.

On a Happy Note

  • My cousin's bachelorette party in Provincetown (Cape Cod). Favorite places: Patio (went to lunch with Mom), Boat Slip Beach Club Tea Dance (4-7p)
  • MGH Diversity Statement- came through on my work email and I was so touched by it.
    • Because of diversity we will excel.   We think broadly about diversity and everything that makes us unique.  It is core to our mission. Our differences make the MGH a more interesting and distinctive environment in which to work and are an important means of providing the very best care to every one of our patients, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, religion, age, sexual orientation, disabilities, life experiences, geographic backgrounds, skills and talents among others. We will not excel without recognizing and appreciating everyone’s perspectives.
    • Through inclusion we will respect.  Together we work hard to make this hospital a diverse and inclusive place of healing. Encouraging a broad range of opinions, ideas and perspectives drives creativity, innovation and excellence. Our continued engagement in our nationally recognized initiatives and programs highlights our commitment to diversity and inclusion. But this ongoing work will not be complete until every employee, every patient, every family member, every visitor feels safe, respected, welcome, comfortable, supported and accepted within our walls.
    • Focused on equity we will serve, heal, educate and innovate.  Our job is to improve health and save lives, regardless of what our patients or colleagues look like, where they come from, what they believe, or who they love. Issues of equity and justice are not separate but rather intertwined with patient care, education, research, and community health. Targeting inequality enhances the quality of care for all. We believe in treating our patients and each other with the dignity that every human being deserves.
  • Meeting up with new friends at Gather Here in Cambridge, MA for knit night.
  • Bathing suits that fit from Athleta. Rash guard love. Pacifica (long sleeved version)
  • Not so happy- water in our well is low because of the summer drought. Good news is that we're finding ways to conserve water and hopefully are building in some better long-term routines.

  • Aila left Giraffe Mommy- her prized possession- at our house. I came home and found her. Told Kris I’d send lots of photos of GM and me having fun so A would know she was ok. Dinner, showers, reading, made her a tent to sleep in, snuggles, riding the train, going to work. set up her own little office. Went to the craft store and then taught her to crochet so she could make a dress. Aila called Monday night when she got back from a trip with her grandmother, sad about it. Told me all of Giraffe Mommy's favorite things so I’d know. Very sweet. Brought her back on Tuesday.
  • Wednesday night I went to Will and Aila’s track meet where we did a mini birthday celebration for Will before they left for vacation. I gave him the Rhino I had intended for Christmas!
  • Finally scored a sock blank from Andre Sue Knits on Etsy
  • Mom found a photo of a dress she made when she was in her early 20's that she wore to her Bridal Shower. She handed it down to me and its my favorite item of clothing! Was fun to have a photo of her wearing it.image

  • I got my order of Tony's Coffee- Cafe Carmelita.
  • Took my niece Aila to her dance classes last weekend.
  • Bought some yarn at Webs after my friend Suzanne posted on Facebook. KFI Luxury- Indulgence Cashmere $12.99 a skein (normally about $25). 75% merino, 25% polyamide, 5% cashmere. Not superwash...  and I didn't realize when I purchased it that it's not fingering even though that's how its categorized on website. At 150g/437 yards it's more like a heavy sport.  Will still work great for socks and will be great gifts knits.

Brainstorming

From the Armchair

Dan and I thoroughly enjoyed Season 1 of Jessica Jones on Netflix

Knitting in Passing

Last Thursday I taught my friend Erika to knit! She did a great job learning the Long Tail Cast on and the knit stitch! Can't wait to work with her some more.

On Friday night, my dear friend Megg asked to knit on my sock and began talking about wanting to have her own project. On Saturday, we went to the local yarn shop and got her set up!
Megg learned to Cast On and how to purl and practiced those. I knit most of the cuff. She sent me a photo this week of her progress!

While I was at their house on Saturday, my nephew Oisin asked to work on his Star Wars Crochet Kit!

We started by teaching him how to wind yarn and then did a little crochet. Oisin knows how to knit but wanted to learn to purl, so we did that too! It was a great afternoon!

Ask Me Stuff

This week I answered a question from NittenNurse about my degree and my line of work which was fun to answer.

Do you have a question you'd like to ask? Come ask in the thread on Ravelry.

On a Happy Note

  • Bathroom reorganization-I moved the bins I use for washing socks under the sink. I also moved our salad spinner into the bathroom since its primary use is for getting extra water out of socks once they've been washed. It's much more convenient this way.
  • I've been very much enjoying hand soap and wool wash soap bars kindly sent to me by Jessica of Soap-a-licious. The wool wash soaps up nicely and its my go to wool wash for socks. It is not currently in the store but check back soon if you're interested.
  • I ordered a project bag from Holland Handmade on Etsy. Erin also has a video podcast on YouTube.image
  • I was sick last weekend but seem to have passed this cold quicker than most of my coworkers.
